Vegetarian Recipe for Mashed Potaoes

This how to make  Super Duper Mashed Potatoes

To begin with I often say to some of our guests from the midwest, “would you like mashed potatoes with dinner? Seems simple enough. Apparently, however in the midwest (and some other places) this simple dish of heavenly texture, aroma and flavor is not known by that moniker. The dish is known instead as  “whipped potatoes” or “smashed potatoes”. Hm!

If you have a real passion for this food you won’t bother with the dehydrated or frozen variety. Just get some fresh potatoes and mash ‘em with a fork or a one a dollar store.

Different type of potatoes will give you a different texture so you’ll have to experiment.


Most people use butter, extra-virgin olive oil, milk, soy milk  or cream to improve flavor.  Some sea salt and fresh ground black pepper seems like a natural along with a variety of herbs and spices including dill and chives.


If you are on a low salt diet I recommend using an herbal product called Vegit. It is salty tasting, has no added salt and is available at most natural food stores. Trader Joes also has a no salt product called “21 Spice salute”.


Mashed Potato Buffet

If your looking to get wild and crazy at dinner or your next part create a mashed potato buffet.

Get some martini glasses and pace them around a hot bowl of either mashed potatoes (or mashed sweet potatoes). The fill small bowels with assorted topping to be mixed by your guests into the potatoes.

  • Sour Cream
  • Shredded cheese
  • Sundried tomatoes
  • Chopped Scallions
  • Onion Crisps
  • Mushroom Gravy
  • Roasted Purple Baby Eggplant Silvers\
  • Sliced Black Olives
  • Caramelized, colored peppers and peppers
  • Crumpled Blue Cheese
  • Butter (or Whipped Dairy Free Butter Substitute)
  • Chopped  Green Tomato salsa with cilantro, capers, and Basil
  • Freshly Grated parmesian
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Steamed Broccoli
