Q. Where are you located?

A.  We are located in the quaint little Village of Stamford, New York – in the heart of the famous North Western Catskill mountains. We are just two blocks from the village – surrounded by the vivid and natural beauty of misty mountains and a small lake across our street.

Q. Why is it called the Catskills Bed and Breakfast and the Harrison Center?

A. We service two types of guests: Individuals and couples who want simple lodging and a quick continental breakfast (the B & B); the others seeking a Spa or educational experience or a fuller vacation including meals and other services like massage, meditation classes, stress management programs, and life coaching.

Q. What is there to do?

A. Since we are open year round activities change with the seasons.

Is it true that you offer cooking classes?:

Yes! Lewis Harrison the co-owner of the Catskill bed and Breakfast and a respected vegetarian chef offers weekly nutrition and food preparation class. This is usually conducted from 11:00 am – 12:30 p on Saturdays. There is an additional charge for the class unless it is included in a prepaid coupon package. These are “demonstration classes” and due to liability issues students are not permitted to handle food in the class or use cutlery for food preparation. In this class you will learn  to approach menus organization from a new perspective , create specific international dishes and utilize different spices to create unique dishes. Please do not come to the class with the expectation that you will be be “physically” preparing food.

What to do while you are here:

•    Security: There are no external locks on the rooms so it is best that you do not leave your valuables in the room when you are away. Each room has a “hook and eye” lock on the inside of the door for your privacy and security. We live here so we are always on the premises at night and available if needed.

If you come by public transportation you will have a number of options for entertainment:

•           Special “quiet room” for contemplation and meditation

•           Bowling – About a 1/3 of a mile from our front door. Ask for hours of operation

•           Extensive library and reading area (Ask about a book list)

•           Videos and films – We have an extensive  library of movies and music concert videos.

•           Hiking: There is a small lake nearby and a long wooded hiking trail  1/4 a mile away

•           Relax on the front porch and watch the mountains, the birds and the stars

•           Sit by the fireplace with hot chocolate or hot mulled apple cider

•          Various Boards games, Jigsaw Puzzles, Crossword Puzzles

•           Art gallery (Located 1/4 mile away in the Village) – Ask about hours of operation.

•           Friday Night or Saturday Night  Music and Entertainment 1/4 mile away. $6 at the door

•           Mount Utsayantha State Park – About 1 mile away

•           Fitness Center – About 1/4 mile away – Additional charge of $5. per day

•           Hobart Book Village – An entire Village of  book stores (Open weekends) 3 miles away

Q. What are your rates?

A. We offer a range of rates that could be classified as budget to moderate. Private rooms begin at $197 per night double occupancy plus tax. We also offer private rooms with a shared bath and a continental breakfast of juice, coffee/tea and croissants for as little as $90.

We also offer full spa programs include full Spa Style meals and

services. Look to the rate section of this website for more details.

Q. Tell me more about your location and transportation?

A. The Western Catskills is a region vivid with natural beauty, enticing

to the senses and abundant in the fullness of each passing season.

Seekers of inspiration, reflection, creativity, authenticity,

challenges, fortune and beauty have, time and again, been drawn to the

Catskills and the village of Stamford in particular. We are the

perfect location to relax and reenergize.

The Catskills B & B/Spa and Retreat Center provides the perfect

environment in which to find yourself, or lose yourself.  Rediscover

history in the local museums, art galleries, golf courses, riding

stables, hiking and biking trails, stone houses, and Victorian

Mansions that fill the area.  Lose track of time sitting by a local

stream or jumping over the headwaters of the Delaware River – just a

block away from the Catskills B & B. Catch your breath at the snowy

summit of the nearby mountains and in the winter ski down the slopes

at Hunter, Belleayre and Windham Mountains.  Abandon your inhibitions

along the back roads and add to your collection with a treasure from

our local antique and antiquarian bookstores.  Check us out and turn off the

cell phone; then transform your life, or at least take a break.

Getting here is easy. From New York City it is about 3 ¼ hours by car,

4 hours by bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (we are 2 blocks

from the Stamford Bus Stop).

Even now, the proximity to New York City and easy accessibility from

other major Eastern cities makes the Catskills B & B an ideal refuge

from the daily grind.

If you are flying in Albany International Airport it’s about 75 minutes

away by Taxi.

Q. What is you emphasis and philosophy?

A. We offer an adventure in well-being, good health and self-help.

Through our programs we hope to improve people’s lives – through

exercise, good nutrition, motivation and inspiration. Though the

premises have an elegant side we aren’t selling brass and marble here.

Glitz and glamour is not what we want to offer our guests. We believe

in results and our guests get just that. If what you want is

simplicity with some rest and relaxation then this is the place.  We

ask you what your goal is upon arrival and then we help you toward

that goal. Though we do not actively promote ourselves as an

eco-vacation destination we are environmentally conscious conserving

water and recycling. For those seeking a “Green” destination we can

proudly say that we have a lower “carbon footprint” than many places

that market themselves as such.

In any of our Spa programs you will receive highly individualized

attention so that you receive an integrated program rich with tips,

techniques and strategies to help you in achieving your goals.

Every program includes a free stretching class, hiking.

Q. What are the meals like?

A. We offer whole food vegetarian cuisine served buffet style.  These

contain for the most part ingredients that have not been refined or

heavily processed. Examples of whole foods include brown rice, 100%

whole grains and whole grain flour, nuts, seeds, beans, dairy products

and dehydrated cane juice as a sweetener. Some vegetables come out of

our garden and are also organically grown. If a person is on a

specialized diet or on a weight loss program, adjustments can be made

to meet their requirements. Most of the food is prepared on the

premises and that is free of artificial colors, flavors, chemical preservatives

and high fructose corn syrup.

Q. What is the guest population like?

A. Coed, most couples. Maximum 10. Some are here as Bed and Breakfast

guests; while others are here for a full spa program. Many of our guests

come from Long Island and New York City. Many Bed and Breakfast guests

use spa services like massage, Reiki and creative visualization a la carte.

Q. Are there packages and minimum stays?

A. We have a 6-night/7day package with arrival and departure days

open. B & B guests are welcome to stay for one night based on the

season and availability and there is a one day spa package available.

Q. Is there a dress code?

A. Always relaxed and casual.

Q. What are the accommodations like?

A. The guest rooms are plain and simple with antiques and pleasant décor.

Q. House rules?

A. No pets please. Absolutely NO SMOKING in or around the premises.

Q. Physical Facilities?

A. The B & B and Spa is located in a 17 room Victorian Home that is

the “Gem” of the registered historical district. Less than ¼ mile away

one can find public tennis courts, a public outdoor pool and a fully

equipped gym. The Golf course is two miles away and there are three ski

mountains within a thirty minute drive and a fourth about forty miles

away. There are three small meeting rooms where classes and lectures

are held, a meditation room and a separate dining area with communal


Q. What is the staff population?

A. Lewis and Lilia Harrison do it all. They love what they do and it

shows. Lilia is well traveled and Lewis is a pioneer in the human

potential and personal development community and had a natural food

catering and party business in the 1980s and 90s.

Q. Are there optional costs?

A. If you purchase a program it is all inclusive though tipping is of course permitted and appreciated.  If you stay as a B & B guest you can purchase meals as well as any other services.

Q. I saw your facility listed somewhere as an “eco-tourism” destination. what does this mean?

A.  Let me give you an in depth explanation on what this means. Our B & B andThe Harrison Center Spa areconsidered  a prime ecotourism destination. A combination of Green Bed and Breakfast, Spa, Sustainable Living and Natural Healing Educational Center, (the Academy of Natural Healing), we are the perfect destination forthe environmentally conscious vacation seeker or traveler. Close to public transportation and walking distance to the Hobart Antiquarian Book Village, we also have access to a forty mile long walking and bicycle trail surrounded by forests and mountains (converted from the old railroad line).

Our center is a fifteen minute drive to the famous nature reserve called, Mt. Utsayantha and also thirty minutedrive to the town of Gilboa – the site of “The Oldest Tree Fossils in the world”; some of which are over 360 million years old.

Whether you are organizing a full service green vacation for your group or seeking green travel deals, we offer environmentally friendly lodging, basic spa services, as well as an eco-friendly bed and breakfast; which serves vegan, vegetarian and whole food meals.

 The best way to practice ecotourism is to build a Green Vacation that’s all about you and your unique needs while supporting the area you are visiting.

The Harrison Center also offers many classes and seminars at our Spa of the Mind in association with theAcademy of Natural Healing ( www.chihealer.com ). Here you can get tips on Green Lifestyles, sustainable living, plant based medicine, energy efficient industries and Living Naturally.

  1. This Bed and Breakfast was the most wonderful pleasant place anyone could stay. The Host and Hostess was ten times better than any hotel staff I have ever known. It is clean, comfy, and the creature comforts of home. I always want to feel like I am at home when I’m away and this place definitely did it for me and my Husband. Thank you Louis and Lily
